With more than 300 members, the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce is recognized as the leading advocate for local businesses – both large and small. Following are excerpts from a speech delivered by Chamber Chairman Omer ErSelcuk at the Chamber’s 2008 Annual Membership Meeting. Last year, we successfully re-positioned the Chamber as a positive force for business here on St. Croix. Among our goals was to begin a collaborative and constructive relationship with our Government.
While we are working together with Government, we are not doing so blindly. During the year, we took stands on key issues such as Education and Waste Management. We did, however, in a respectful manner that has kept the doors throughout government open.
It is my strong belief that our Government, through our Governor, has chosen a road that will lead us strongly towards the economic success we all desire. And as with any strong leader who is moving in the right direction, our role can, in part, become one of being supportive of his efforts.
Believe it or not, there are still some who naively or consciously do not want to wish to see forward progress as they have become used to the old wasteful and divisive ways of the past. It is up to all of us, not just our leaders, to power past these road blocks to the success we so richly deserve.
Also, there are elections coming – we need to ensure we know where our legislative candidates, old and new, stand on the key issues and to let them know where we stand!
The good news is that with the Government moving in the right direction, along with our continued involvement to ensure the interests of the private sector are protected, we can begin to focus more energy on tackling the rest of our goals, including:
Economic Development
- Workforce Development and Education
- Civil Justice Reform
- Charitable Causes
- Internal Chamber Improvements
- Building our Chamber and continuing to diversify our membership, board, and leadership to better represent the private sector on St. Croix
I cannot say how excited I am about 2008 and St. Croix and the Virgin Islands’ future. We all know great things are coming! If we put them together, plus what we already have they spell real progress.
