Members of a Virgin Islands delegation who attended the 2018 Smart City Summit & Expo in Taiwan will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority Conference Room in the William D. Roebuck Industrial Park on St. Croix. A meet-and-greet reception for the public will be held at 6 p.m. at Club Comanche “Hotel St. Croix,” hosted by the St. Croix Economic Development Initiative.
Members and stakeholders of the government and private sector business community will be in attendance at the press conference to provide an overview of the summit and discuss ideas for rebuilding the territory’s infrastructure, said Senate President Myron D. Jackson, who led the public-sector representatives at the summit on invitation from Taiwan. The private-sector contingent was led by Anthony Weeks, managing director of the St. Croix Economic Development Initiative, a macroeconomic and public policy think-tank involved in economic, business, and project development.
“The Virgin Islands is at a crossroads of deciding what its future will look like, and what kind of infrastructure we are going to put in place to support the type of economic prosperity for the people of the Virgin Islands to make us competitive in the 21st century,” Weeks said. “By building a smart city infrastructure we are creating the ability for the USVI to better compete, do business, and communicate in a very advanced and technological way.”
The delegation’s goal at the Taipei summit was to seek out opportunities for smart approaches to our recovery in areas such as infrastructure, transportation, schools, housing, and hospitals, while ultimately creating a digital economy and business opportunities.
“The summit showcased some of the best of the world’s technology that could help us foster a sustainable environment, opportunities for our children, and prosperity for our companies and institutions,” Jackson said.
Established in 2014, the annual summit highlights Taiwan’s world-leading expertise in intelligent urban solutions and trends. Leaders around the world gathered in Taipei to exchange their experience in smart city development, innovative applications and solutions, and to communicate directly with suppliers and buyers. The summit and expo is one of the largest smart city trade shows in the Asia-Pacific region.
